Great North Swim 2017

Yesterday we had the pleasure of WATCHING the Great North Swim 1 mile event, held on Lake Windermere, in rather choppy conditions.

Why? Because my nephew, Michael (Mick) Edge was taking part. That was a good enough reason for us!

Due to scarce parking and crowds of both swimmers and spectators, we took the option of "Park, Sail and walk", leaving the car at Bowness, taking the steamer up the lake to Ambleside and then walking a mile back down to Low Wood marina.

We made it just as the 1 mile event was starting, so managed to catch a brief glimpse of Mick before he set foot in the, rather forbidding looking water...

As all 1 milers had red swim caps on, it was impossible to tell one from another once they were in the water and off..

We were left to wait on the shore on a dry and relatively warm evening, speculating how Mick would do in this, his first open water swim.

The first swimmer returned in a time of 00:23:08 mins.

A short while later, Keri-ann Payne, double world champion and Olympic Silver medalist in open water swimming, who had joined the 1 mile swim for fun, came ashore!

and then this lady, here being interviewed - at some length .....

Naomi Crowder had been in the water for 02:43:57, and her age??? It's hard to believe but this wonderful lady is 81 years old and hopes to do the same again next year. What an inspiration!

Then a sight we hadn't expected to pick up on the camera.. Mick, amongst the swimmers out in the water...

Soon followed by this sequence..

Mick was back in 00:35:31, coming second in his age group. What a result!

It only remained for us to hand him our welcome back poster..

and to take his photo with the lady who started it all..... Carmel!

THANK YOU, CARMEL,
You're a gem.

What a fantastic evening!
